Local Must-Do Activities In Central Alabama This Spring

Are you and your family looking for some fun, local activities to get out of the house and enjoy? We’ve listed some of the top attractions of South Alabama for you to explore if you haven’t already. No matter what interests your crew has, there’s something for everyone in this area!

US Space and Rocket Center

If you or your kids are interested in rockets and space, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center is a great place to spend the day. This is the largest space museum in the United States, and it contains artifacts from the Apollo program, as well as interactive science exhibits for you and the kids. It’s right off exit 15 on interstate 565, so plan for a quick trip or make a whole day out of it.

Birmingham Museum of Art

Looking to spend a relaxing day in the air conditioning at the museum? Look no further than the Birmingham Museum of Art. There’s over 24,000 amazing works of art including paintings, sculptures, murals, and decorations that span over a variety of cultures. You’ll have a unique ability to find Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American style works, and might even get to see a unique limited-time exhibit depending on when you go. Currently there is a Light Play special exhibit that features various artists’ work with shadows and explores how light affects different artistic mediums. Visit the museum’s website to stay updated on upcoming events and plan your trip!

Cheaha State Park

For nature lovers, the Cheaha State Park is one of Central Alabama’s top attractions and most scenic parks. Here you can enjoy camping, hiking, biking, walks, or runs with friends and family. If you’re just traveling for the day, pick up some snacks and easy meal options from the Mountain Store and stop by the picnic tables for a fun lunch idea. This is a great date idea for couples!

Huntsville Botanical Center

Take a relaxing stroll through Huntsville’s very own Botanical Center on a beautiful April Day! The center has many floral arrangements and classes you can take, such as the Plant a Pot: Container Design and Vegetable Planting Class, and the whole family can participate!

McWane Science Center

On your next trip to downtown Birmingham, the McWane Science Center is an unmissable attraction. In the World of Water Aquarium, there’s over 50 species for you to observe and learn about in the Lake Tank, River Journey, and Ocean Journey exhibits. The center also features other scientific phenomena, and has Tesla’s coils, a Van de Graff generator, and other permanent exhibits! When you’re done learning, there’s an iMax theater to enjoy a movie at before heading home.

Birmingham Zoo

The Birmingham Zoo is home to many exotic and endangered species, such as rhinos, giraffes, sea lions, zebras, and even elephants! Ride the trolley around the zoo to see land and aquatic animals, and visit some of the restaurants on the property to keep you fueled through the day.

Cathedral Caverns State Park

Another stunning location to visit in Central Alabama is the Cathedral Caverns State Park. Made up of natural caves, the dramatic look gave it its name, as the beautiful caves resemble a gothic Cathedral. Take a walking tour of the interior cave system and see a “caveman” perched atop a flowstone wall, a “frozen” waterfall, and a stalagmite that is 27 feet tall and 3 inches wide.
